Volunteer

We greatly appreciate and depend on a team of volunteers at Manna Food Pantry. Want to get involved? There are a variety of ways
you can help!

Food Rescue

Help rescue usable food from local businesses and deliver it back to Manna or a Partner Agency. Our vehicles are used for this but we require a valid driver's license. The ability to lift up to 40 pounds is required. Food rescue hours are M-F 8am-4pm. You may volunteer on a regular schedule or occasional basis.

Pantry Service

This is an opportunity to meet and interact with our clients. This is a very social volunteer opportunity and allows for "one on one" time with clients and other volunteers. You may also enjoy repacking food, or restocking pantry shelves. Pantry is open on Tuesdays from 9am-12noon. Volunteering is available beginning at 7:30am.

Backpack Program and Delivery

The "Food 4 Kids" Backpack Program sends home an extra bag of food for the weekend to children in need. We have the ability to accommodate individuals and groups for this project. We welcome families with children! We ask that small groups call ahead to schedule a time to volunteer. Duties in this area include: labeling product, stocking the food, preparing boxes, packing the food bags, and prepping for delivery. This project is ongoing daily 8am-4pm, or as scheduled by a group when staff is available. The delivery of the bags is done throughout the week. This volunteer opportunity can require anywhere from 2-5 hours depending on the route. The ability to lift up to 20 pounds is required, there will be someone to help you. Manna's vehicles are used for delivery, a valid driver's license is required to have on file for a driving history report.

Warehouse Assistance

We are always looking for help in the warehouse whether we are preparing to receive our semi-truck from Feeding America West Michigan or organizing and restocking of pallets. This opportunity offers good exercise while serving our neighbors. The ability to lift up to 40 pounds is required. This project is ongoing daily 9am-4pm.

Repacking Food

This project involves repacking miscellaneous food items so that they can be distributed to other agencies or our own Manna Food Pantry. You will be working in our repack room which is a sanitized and clean environment. Individuals and small groups up to eight are welcome. This project is ongoing daily 9am-4pm or as scheduled by a group when staff is available.

There are no volunteer contracts at Manna. Anytime you have available will be greatly appreciated whether it is 15 minutes or an entire day! Fill out the Volunteer Inquiry Form to the right or contact Manna at 231-347-8852 to learn more or schedule a tour.

From a volunteer...

Don JacobsonWhen my wife and I moved to East Jordan from Flint in 1987, I joined a Care and Share program in our area to feed the poor. I remember seeing a sign that Manna was looking for volunteer, but I felt that I lived a little too far away. I have always felt a need to help the poor and misfortunate.

When my wife died and I remarried and moved to Petoskey, I was surprised to learn that Manna was just a short distance from our home. Still feeling a calling to help the misfortunate, I went and talked to Kathy and Gabby. They made me feel that I could be of service to them and seemed to be thrilled that I had the desire to help out.

Since then, about seven years, I have helped our in many capacities: from gardening to driving the truck, maintenance work, handyman and other jobs. Most recently I am knows as the "Sweet Man" because I hand out the sweet goods to those who come to pantry. They have also given me the name of "Toy Man" because I make wooden toys all year to hand out at Christmas to kids who come through Manna. My wife and I also delivered backpacks to the schools until my wife became ill.

I love working at Manna. I have made many friends in the process but most of all, I feel I am doing God's will because he told us in his word, " Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do unto me."
